VIA LOCUSTA

WHAT WE DID

Rittenhouse Square welcomes Via Locusta, Schulson Collective's newest concept spot. Translating to “Locust Street” in Italian, this new location features specialty pasta dishes and an atmosphere that takes you back to the old world. The front of the eatery is composed of a stained mahogany entranceway and matching micro-doors set in the yellow brick of the historic building. The floor of the entrance composed of terracotta tile starting guests on their journey. The floor in the seating area is rough-sawn, reclaimed oak that is paired with plaster walls and ceiling giving the room a rustic aura. The bi-level kitchen features a window on the second floor looking in on the prep area. The custom bar back, installed by RKA, is oak that was stained and finished to match the trim, doors, and custom angled mirror frames in the dining area. The dark oak is paired with a light pink marble bar top, breaking up some of the darker tones and adding some contrast. The linear chandeliers complete the space and add modern flare to the classic design.

UNIQUE TO THIS PROJECT

RKA faced some difficulties during this job because the building itself is listed as historic and any alterations to the exterior, including the mahogany entrance and micro-doors, had to be approved by the Philadelphia Historical Commission. Also, the interior required the installation of multiple access panels throughout to conceal the mechanical components of the building while also preserving the homey and intimate feel of the space. Overall, the finished product is meant to be snapshot from a bygone age while also incorporating modern elements creating the perfect place to enjoy classic, handmade pastas made from locally sourced grain and produce.
